The purchase includes the Hunter Cement Plant located in New Braunfels, Texas, with a capacity of 2.1 million tons and more than 140 years of limestone cement reserves, and four terminals: three in the Houston metropolitan area and one terminal in Beaumont, Texas.

Serge Schmidt, Ash Grove President, stated the acquisition represents a significant milestone in the company's growth strategy. "Securing these resources bolsters Ash Grove's status in Texas and amplifies our presence in a rapidly expanding market. The Hunter facility's high-quality assets align with our long-term focused growth plans. These assets will also enable us to participate more significantly in Texas as we pursue our vision to develop sustainable solutions that build, connect and improve our world."

Overall, the facilities purchased by CRH for $2.1 billion include the Hunter plant and terminals placed in the Americas Cement (Ash Grove) business and 20 concrete plants, serving the Austin and San Antonio markets, placed in the American Materials business.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.

The new cement mill will transform the Durkee Plant, enabling it to produce low-carbon cement to meet the growing market demand for sustainable building materials. It will support multiple markets across the region by increasing capacity with no net increase in carbon emissions.

In September 2022, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) announced up to $189 million in funding as part of the Department of Energy Office of Clean Energy Demonstration (OCED) to accelerate the implementation of integrated carbon capture and storage technologies (CCS) across the U.S.OCED has selected eight projects, including the Ash Grove Foreman Cement Plant. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the terminal's grand re-opening will be held on February 7, 2022.

This maiden shipment completes the Phase 1 transformation project at Port Manatee, which began in early 2021. The project will improve Ash Grove’s capacity to import cement, slag, and fly ash to meet customers' existing and future needs in the Florida and South Georgia markets.

The offloading of the fly ash will utilize Ash Grove’s Ship Unloader at the terminal. The largest Mobile Pneumatic Ship Unloader built, has twin 800 hp blowers, 120’ suction arm, and can offload a dry bulk vessel at a very high rate while maintaining maximum efficiency and minimizing environmental impact by eliminating dust emissions. This machine was custom built for Ash Grove by FLSmidth to meet their specific needs.

The infrastructure improvements and new technology will also increase efficiency and improve environmental performance at the strategically located Port Manatee terminal, leveraging its existing silo capacity and complementing the capabilities of Ash Grove’s cement plants in Sumterville and Branford.

“This shipment will help meet Ash Grove’s growing demand for cementitious materials in Florida. The upgrades at Port Manatee import terminal demonstrate Ash Grove’s commitment to being the leading cement provider in the region and improving the environmental effects of our products in the areas we serve,” said Ash Grove Regional President Monica Manolas.

The project will improve Ash Grove’s capacity to import cement, cement slag, and fly ash to meet the existing and future needs of customers in the Florida and South Georgia markets.

The upgrade project includes the addition of a high capacity FLS / Kovako ship unloader at the terminal, together with the upgrade of existing material transfer and electrical systems, and the addition of self-loading capabilities.
